Lohan Martial Arts NGO

Who we are

We are a small non-profit initiative teaching Martial Arts in Norwich, East Anglia (formally registered as ‘private company limited by guarantee’).

With Lohan Martial Arts, we wish to provide a space where people can socialise through sports, particularly for people who otherwise would not have easy access to such an environment. There is no need for prior knowledge of the Martial Arts.

Our Mission - what we offer

Our aim is to improve the quality of life and personal development, particularly of people in need, through practicing Martial Arts. The latter may include children whose parents can otherwise not afford to pay for classes that benefit their kids’ physical and mental well-being, or women who have suffered from abuse, people experiencing discrimination in our society, such as immigrants or racial minorities, or the long-term unemployed. Please note that classes are not restricted to these groups of people. Instead we welcome anyone, so we do not duplicate the exclusive social patterns we wish to overcome. We strongly believe that people of all ages, backgrounds and cultures learning and exercising together can help considerably to create an integrated, healthy and happy community.

The Martial Arts are a particular type of sport that lends itself to this mission wonderfully. On the one hand, it helps to improve physical well-being, teaches ways to defend oneself, and thereby creates a feeling of bodily happiness, confidence and strength. On the other hand, the Martial Arts go beyond the physical dimension. There is a mental, or rather spiritual, side to practicing kung fu, tai chi or yoga. The Martial Arts teach us how to balance and connect the body and mind. This helps with the ability to be more focussed, think positive, be calm, and ultimately be more confident and successful.

Who can take part?

The classes are free and open to anyone. To take part, please just come along to a class, or contact us via email. There is no need to apply officially, however, we would like to know a bit about your background. In case we are full, we can then try to prioritise those who could otherwise not afford Martial Arts classes.
